Cultural Reforesting
Cultural Reforesting is a long-term programme at Orleans House Gallery and Richmond Arts Service that explores the question ‘How can we renew our relationship with nature?’
Cultural Reforesting has asked this question since 2020. As an organisation we continue to invite artists, scientists, geographers, activists, indigenous communities, and more to share space and knowledge in order to make a difference.
Cultural Reforesting is an invitation to imagine, connect and act together, recognising that small local actions can contribute to wider environmental change and make a difference.
Artists have taken on subjects as wide-ranging as:
- Growing food and supermarkets
- Urban heat and our relationship with the sun
- The river Thames its colonial history and the life it supports
- How we find ourselves surrounded by international species
- Oak trees as gifts to the future
- Indigenous knowledge as essential perspectives we should listen to
- Other species and our need for darkness
- Our own emotional and practical journey to making a difference
- Our ability to comprehend our everyday relationships with the species and ecosystems we encounter every day
- Children as free, playful participants as part of nature

The heart of Cultural Reforesting is the artist-led, interdisciplinary research projects which we have supported. We invite collaborators to spend time in the ecosystem of the gallery and surrounding woodland to develop ideas that can inspire positive environmental change.
