Meet the Artist: Finn Chatwyn-Ros

Meet Finn Chatwyn-Ros, our new artist delivering Richmond Art Service’s early years programme, Curious Tots.

Finn is an early years music facilitator and songwriter with over 10 years’ experience working with babies, early years children and their adults. She has taught in schools, nurseries, music hubs, libraries and community centres, as well as festivals and parties. Finn is the founder of Crescendo which has been running since 2011 and provides quality, tailored music sessions across London. The organisation also runs post-natal music sessions, baby classes and toddler classes in South London.

Finn became a mother for the first time over lockdown and this has had a profound effect on her practice; making her consider her classes from the perspective of a new parent. Finn now includes time for chat and (voluntary) sharing with the aim of creating an inclusive, non-judgemental community space for parents and carers. Her sessions have a strong focus on sensory and free musical exploration. A carefully considered curriculum and engaging activities within a calm environment promotes musical and social-emotional development. Through her varying roles, Finn has worked closely with children from many backgrounds, experiences and needs. She also works with parents to adapt her practice to the children in each session.

At her Curious Tots sessions you will find a Song Sack. Pull out one of the carefully considered songs (a mixture of originals and old favourites) and get ready to wiggle and sing. During the session we will be introduced to percussion instruments, sensory scarves, stretchy lycra and colourful puppets. There will be a mixture of gentle calm songs and cuddles, as well as louder action songs. Finn uses Makaton signs to support her singing and will also provide each child with their own props for the session to be explored freely.

Finn will be using the gorgeous surroundings of Orleans House Gallery, as well as the activities within the sessions to inspire her song writing; these original songs will then be shared with the groups. As the lead facilitator for Curious Tots, Finn will be exploring and responding to our Play and Imagination programme. Through her work and the songs she develops at Orleans House Gallery she will be questioning: how do play and imagination have an impact on everyday lives?
