See Saw @ Home – Mass and Volume

Join us on Friday for activities for under 5s to do together with a grown up.  We will be exploring line, colour, shape, pattern, texture, design and composition, mass and volume and balance in fun and easy ways for little ones.

This week is all about mass and volume.

All you have to do is scroll through the page to find the artwork from the Borough Art Collection that has inspired us today.  Then carry on scrolling to find different activities which encourage you to See, Imagine and Create.

A pen and ink drawing of a large tree on a riverbank.

This week we will be looking closely at big things and small things.

This is a pen and ink drawing by John Claude Nattes.

It is called Putney Bridge from under the Abeille Trees, Barn Elms. It was drawn in the mid 19th Century.

Can you see a very big tree?

Can you see some small leaves?

See

There are some big gold leaves and small butterflies in the picture below.

Look very carefully – how many can you see?

You can download the image here so you can Zoom in and out to find them.

Imagine

Watch the video and imagine what could be happening in the picture.

Create

There are two things to create with us this week.

1.Big Leaves, Small Insects

Watch the videos and make your own insects sitting on big leaves.  You will need:

  • Pencil
  • Pens
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Paper

Below the video is an accessible walkthrough of the activity.

2.Big Movements, Small Movements

Move your body inspired by the drawing. There is a written instruction of what to do underneath the video.

Remember to share your creations with us #SeeSawAtHome #OrleansHouseGallery
