Sunday Afternoon Art – Terrible Tom and the Hidden Treasure

Sunday Afternoon Art is our monthly art drop-in session which is usually held at the Gallery for families to take part in on the first Sunday of every month. Whilst the Gallery is closed, we are hosting a new Sunday Afternoon Art activity online every week so you can continue to get creative with us whilst at home.

Today’s activity has been designed by Lauren Grierson of Lauren and the Story Box.

Orleans House Gallery houses a very special collection of objects that belonged to the Victorian Explorer Sir Richard Burton.  As well as exploring different parts of the world, Burton translated The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night which is more commonly known as The Arabian Nights and includes the story of Aladdin.

Lauren has written and read for us a story based on the story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves from this book, aimed at children aged 3-6 years.  It is set in the Ancient Persian Empire and is all about the characters of Terrible Tom and Brilliant Brandon.  Lauren has recorded the story in three parts and there is a craft activity that you can complete after each part of the story.

Now you have read the story, why not have a go at making a camel mask?  You can download the worksheet or make your own camel using cardboard (you can use an old cereal box if you don’t have any other card), scissors, colours and a stick.  Lauren used a paper straw, but you can use a lollipop stick, or you can even roll up a piece of an old cardboard box to use as a stick.

Now make your own pyramid by downloading this worksheet.  If you don’t have a printer then you can copy the template into card.

Terrible Tom and the Hidden Treasure Part 3

Now you have finished the story, make your own treasure chest by downloading the worksheet.  If you don’t have a printer, then you can make your own chest from any recycling in your house, or copy the template onto card by hand.
